This work rewards aircraft chosen for short-field performance rather than cabin finish, and crews who have operated into unprepared fields before. Humanitarian programmes also work to fixed budgets and public accountability, so we quote them plainly, do not inflate for urgency, and say when a cheaper routing exists even where it earns us less.
Relevant past experience
Through the pandemic we flew relief into rural communities with no usable road access — hygiene kits printed in isiZulu, unloaded by hand onto grass. A Pilatus PC-12 gets into strips a jet cannot, which is the entire reason it was the right aircraft that week.
